📅 On September the 4th, on the sidelines of the African Climate Summit currently being held in Nairobi, MFI and INAM (National Met Institute of Mozambique), represented by its Director General Mr. Aderito Aramuge, have signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement for the design and implementation of a global modernisation project of the national Mozambican weather service. The ceremony was witnessed by Ms. Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, French Minister of State for Development, Francophonie and International Partnerships, and by Dr. Mateus Magala, Minister of Transport & Communication of Mozambique.

🌀 Indeed, in recent years, in a context of global climate change and multiplication of severe meteorological events, Mozambique has appeared to be one of the most vulnerable countries in the world. In the past 5 years, the country has faced not less than 6 tropical cyclones and storms (Freddy, Gombe, Ana, Eloise, Kenneth and Idai) leading to drastic human, material and economic losses. In this context, the INAM, as the official public entity in charge of delivering early warnings and meteorological / climate services for Mozambique, is on the front line and has been seeking for assistance in order to strengthen its capacities to better protect its population and support its economy. The strategic partnership with MFI, world leader in the field of global strengthening projects for National Hydromet Services, was natural.

🤝🏽 Through the newly signed partnership agreement, MFI and INAM confirm their willingness to jointly design and implement a global modernization project embracing every step of the meteorological value chain, from basic infrastructure and observation till early warning and service delivery. Based on a Design-Build-Operate approach, the project will include both technical solutions and all necessary transversal services such as capacity building, change management and long-term technical support. Through this project Mozambique expects to be one of the first eligible countries to implement the “Early Warning for All” UN objective in a timely, effective and sustainable manner, based on MFI’s “W4ALL” approach (more info here: https://www.mfi.fr/news/mfis-strategy-for-the-early-warning-for-all-initiative/).
